  • Mobilizing women living with HIV from district levels and initiate district level women’s forum in 9 districts Supported by Tamilnadu State AIDS Control Society (TNSACS)
    Background:
    PWN+ has been working with TNSACS since 1999, and has worked on various projects such as 'networking and advocacy of women living with HIV in Tamilnadu', and 'Creating an enabling environment for WLHA in Tamilnadu'.
    Activities:
    The main activities conducted so far involved counselling, support group meetings, networking, advocacy, training of WLHA, outreach programmes, initiation of groups of WLHA at district levels, and developing and disseminating IEC. The current project looks at identifying and recruiting key contacts to further intensify the activities at the district level, and to build capacities of WLHA at district levels.
    Districts worked:
    Chennai, Trichy, Perambalur, coimbatore, Erode, namakkal, Virudhunagar, Thirunelveli, madurai, Theni, Vellore, Kanyakumari, Thanjavur.

    Youth Ambassadors for Positive Living Project-Supported by Commonwealth youth Programme Asia center.
    Youth Ambassadors for Positive Living are young people who are either infected/affected by HIV/AIDS or rehabilitated drug addicts or healthy young people who are recruited through building communicational, public relations skills and by education in youth work and youth health issues. As it has been found that young people have closer affinity to young people to open up dialogues and share experiences with people of the same group.
    Positive Women network involves women living with HIV as Youth Ambassadors under this programme
    Aim:
    To involve youth to be partners in prevention, care and support through “youth ambassadors programme”.
    Objectives:

  • To educate the youth on HIV/AIDS and positive living.

  • To sensitise them on issues affecting people living with HIV.

  • To train them as positive speakers for positive living.

    Achievements In TamilNadu :
    Number of college programmes conducted: 21
    Number of Camps conducted for the youth: 8
    20 youth ambassadors (women Living with HIV) have been developed.

    Empowering WLHA through visioning, capacity building, and advocacy Supported by: UNIFEM
    PWN+ received support from UNIFEM for the project ‘empowering WLHA through visioning, capacity-building and advocacy’ in 2004 for a period of nine months, from July 2004 to March 2005.
    The long-term objectives of the project are as follows:

  • To strengthen the voice of women living with HIV to advocate for their rights and facilitate better services for quality living.

  • To develop partners within the PLWH/A network to advocate and mainstream issues of women living with HIV in their programmes

  • To create an understanding about the need for partnership between women living with HIV and the policy / programme planners, and the strength that comes out of developing women as leaders.

    Activities Under this project,
    two legal literacy workshops were organized for WLHA in Andhra Pradesh (August 2004) and Gujarat (Sep 2004).
    Two visioning workshops of PWN+ were organized - North region (New Delhi, Oct 2004) and Northeast region (Guwahati, Nov 2004), through which a nation wide consensus on common objectives, strategies, and enabling processes and activities was developed.
    A vision document of PWN+ was brought out, with support from UNIFEM, UNICEF, and UNAIDS.
    A gender training workshop has been planned for March 2005 to facilitate a better understanding of issues that are particular to women and thereby motivating network members to be partner advocates in development programmes for women living with HIV.

    Strengthening Women’s Forum at State levels Supported by American Jewish World Service
    Women account for half the population of the total infected in India, i.e. about 2.5 million women have been stated as infected. This alarming increase has also resulted in severe impact on women who are already disadvantaged socially and economically. This has many resulted in many women being challenged in accessing the adequate care and health services. This has also resulted in documenting issues and focusing them through Networking and Advocacy strategies.
    Project Goal:
    To initiate support groups (Women’s wing) at State Levels inorder to facilitate an enabling environment for women living with HIV.
    Objectives:

  • To identify the needs of women living with HIV through needs assessment strategies.

  • To create a platform and strengthen the voice of women’s groups to advocate for their rights thereby contributing towards the cause.
    States Covered: Kerala, Maharashtra and Gujarat

    Strengthening PLWHA networks for National and State Advocacy on Health and workplace issues.
    Supported by: INP+ through Avahan Project

    Objectives (with reference to PWN+): To build capacity of PWN+ and WLHA to effectively advocate for WLHA in the AVAHAN states (Tamilnadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Manipur, Nagaland).
    To develop effective advocacy strategies to address stigma and discrimination in healthcare systems and the workplace.
    To advocate with the Government and other key stakeholders on policies and Programmes related to HIV, including access to treatment in the six IAI states.
    Activities:

  • Establishment of PWN+ secretariat – A national secretariat of PWN+ would be facilitated to advocate for specific issues related to WLHA.

  • Capacity building workshops for WLHA in the six AVAHAN states.

    Capacity Building Workshops for women living with HIV/AIDS in Karnataka.
    Supported by ICHAP, KSAPS-Karnataka Project implemented by: Women’s Forum of KNP+
    Project Goal:
    To build the capacities of women Living with HIV in Karnataka to enable them to improve their quality of life and strengthen their involvement in the HIV/AIDS movement.
    Activities:

  • Capacity Building workshop for women Living with HIV in & districts.

  • Identifying Key contacts from each of the 7 districts and capacity Building programmes for them

  • Networking and Advocacy

    Districts covered:
    Bangalore,Mysore,Kolar,Udupi,Tumkur,Bagalkote,Dharwad.

    Prevention of HIV among drug users in SAARC Countries. Supported by: UNODC
    The HIV infection is increasing among the Drug users. Though the current figures of injecting drug use related HIV are low they are extremely high in pockets of South Asia it is rising there is however, still a window of opportunity to address the key issues and concerns around the twin epidemics of drug use and HIV. Areas to be covered for the project in 3 north eastern states of Manipur, Mizoram and Nagaland and the 4 metros- Link with INP+ to reach the sexual partners of women drug users thereby creating a nationwide network
    The three pillars of the project involve:

  • Capacity building

  • Ensuring gender sensitivity.

  • Sustainability beyond project life.

    Forming support groups for WLHA drug users.

    Drop-in centre for Women living with HIV in Chennai City. Supported by: CAPACS
    This programme focussed on establishment of a drop-in centre in chennai to enable WLHA to access information, psychosocial support, counselling, and other referral services.
    Activities:

  • Counseling

  • Support group Meetings.

  • Visits to VCTCs, PPTCT centers, hospitals.

  • Advocacy programmes.

    Providing support through drop-in centre – relaxation, access to information, training. WLHA were encouraged to visit the drop-in centre during the daytime for relaxation purposes also. Networking with all the VCTCs, PPTCTs, and hospitals in chennai was done. This project was initiated in January 2004.
